Grief Recovery

Not everything that is faced can be changed,
But nothing can be changed until it is faced.
       - George Baldwin

Death and loss are an inevitable part of living and grief is a natural response to loss. What doesn't come so naturally is the wisdom in management of grief. It takes work for us to heal, to survive, and to finally let loss go in order to embrace life and its changes. No book will give us all the answers and there are no "right" words to say to those in grief. It's the trying, the sharing and caring - the wanting to help and the willingness to listen - that says, "I care about you." When we know that we do care about each other, then together we can talk about even the most difficult things and cope with difficult times.

Below are two grief support groups that meet on a regular basis to help those dealing with the death of a loved one. While these groups do not actually meet at St. Luke, they are facilitated by Sharon Duffy, a member of our congregation. Everyone is invited to attend and there is no charge to do so.

Hope

A Support Group For Parents Who Have Lost Their Baby Due to Miscarriage, Stillbirth, or Death of a Newborn.

Helping Other Parents Endure (HOPE) is a group of people reaching out to help grieving parents deal effectively with the loss of a baby. The group consists of parents who have experienced this loss as well as professional counselors. The professionals provide many years of experience in dealing with the death of an expected child. Together with other parents, they form a warm support group that provides understanding and acceptance. Many parents have felt the grief of losing an expected child. With the loss comes a special set of problems, often little understood by friends and even medical personnel.

HOPE encourages and promotes an environment of comfort and understanding, during a time when families grieve as they work towards acceptance or resolution after the loss of their child. At the same time HOPE provides information and education to professionals and families in order to increase their sensitivity, understanding and awareness.

HOPE meets in the
Bryan Medical Plaza, located northeast of Bryan Memorial Hospital at 7:30 pm on the first Wednesday of each month. There is no charge and free parking is available. Sharon Duffy, RN MS, of Sharon's Support System is the facilitator of this group. For more information please call 473-2822 and leave a message.

H.O.P.E. Inc is a non-profit corporation that is run for and by parents who have experienced a loss of an infant. HOPE is a non-member organization maintained by an elected board of directors and operates solely on the tax-deductible contributions it receives.
